HP blocks compatible cartridges in its Office Jet Pro printers

The great manufacturer HP takes matters into its own hands! It wants to secure its cartridge offer and protect its intellectual property. HP has published a micro software that blocks the use of non-HP replacement cartridges. Thus, HP opposes the replacement of cartridges that are not manufactured by HP.  Nowadays, HP inkjet printers are economical. On the other hand, the replacement of their OEM cartridges is very expensive. Therefore the cartridges of non-HP cartridges are less expensive. Although third party cartridges are a good and lucrative business, the print quality is not guaranteed. So, HP blocks compatible and recycled cartridges in its Office Jet Pro printers, see why.

Meanwhile, even though manufacturers of compatible cartridges make a lot of money with their third party cartridges, this remains an issue for HP. That’s why HP has taken matters into its own hands by advertising a firmware update for part of its Officejet Pro series.

In the past, Inkjet411, a refill company, had announced that the firmware (this is the version ending with 41547A) could disable certain types of compatible cartridges. In this sense, here are the printers that had to be touched at that time are the following:

Error message: One or more cartridges are unrecognized, missing or damaged.

For example, “One or more cartridges are missing or damaged. In addition, we regularly see the error message “Cartridge not recognized. However, distributors of compatible cartridges claim that HP has announced a date when compatible and recycled cartridges will no longer be recognized by HP printers. On Lifehacker Australia, an HP spokesperson said that as of the end of 2015, HP has implemented features in its HP Officejet, Officejet Pro and Officejet Pro X printers. This is to ensure that only HP cartridges will be used in these printers and protect its intellectual property.

For example, [HP] printers use cartridges that have been recharged or remanufactured with an original HP security chip; compatible cartridges may not work.

In most cases, this update was installed in the HP printer, and in other cases it was implemented as part of a firmware update for the printer. This is not related to a recent firmware update; in most cases, the printer is shipped with this firmware.

Refilled and Manufactured Cartridges

HP manufactures printers that are compatible with refilled and remanufactured cartridges using genuine HP chips. As such, HP printers are not manufactured with technology that prevents their use. Affected customers are advised to contact their ink cartridge supplier to determine if their cartridges use a non-HP security chip. Original HP ink cartridges (product numbers 934/935, 950/951 and 970/971) always contain an original HP “security chip”.
