How to refill Canon ink cartridge

Step one:

Purchase a set of ink refills from your local supplier.

Step Two:

Organize your kit and a pack of paper towels on a large flat work surface, table or desk.

Step Three:

Remove the empty ink cartridge from the printer.

Step Four:

When using ink, cover your hands with a pair of disposable plastic gloves, as the ink will leave stains. Wear an apron or old clothes to avoid the inconvenience of splatter.

Step five:

Take a paper towel and fold it several times. Work on paper towels to avoid staining the work area when ink spills.

Step Six:

Use paper towels to avoid staining the work area when ink leaks.

Place the empty ink cartridge on a paper towel.

Step Seven:

Review the instruction manual that came with the refill kit for instructions on how to refill Canon ink cartridges. (The following instructions are general instructions only).

Step Eight:

Locate the ink refill holes on the top of the ink cartridge. You may feel a depression when you rub the label with your fingers. Some ink cartridges have more than one hole, but only one leads to the ink cartridge being refilled. There is a sponge in that hole.

Step nine:

Use a sharp pencil to poke a hole in the top of the ink cartridge, or you can use a utility knife or screwdriver to remove the top label (see kit instructions for correct location).

Step Ten:

Insert the long needle of the ink refill bottle deep into the appropriate hole and push the foam to the bottom of the ink cartridge. It is important not to allow air to enter the filter element foam during the filling process. (The air prevents the ink from reaching the print head, thus preventing the print cartridge from printing.

Step 11:

Fill the ink slowly. Be careful not to overfill.

Step 12:

Before the ink spills, stop quickly.

Step thirteen:

Protect the hole with a small piece of clear tape. (This is better than the sealing dots included in the kit.) Make sure no ink leaks from the top hole. (This is where the tape comes in.) Be careful not to contaminate the ink colors.

Step Fourteen:

Repeat the above steps for the tri-color ink cartridge.

Step Fifteen:

After filling the ink cartridge, gently tap (do not wipe or rub) the print head of the ink cartridge on a folded paper towel. You may need to do this several times.

Step Sixteen:

Put the ink cartridge back into the printer. Never install an ink cartridge so the ink is overflowing.

Step Seventeen:

Immediately clean the print head and/or print many different colors immediately to get the ink flowing. If necessary, print several test pages.
